Massive X6.9 Solar Flare: The largest solar flare of Cycle 24 just took place at 08:05 UTC and it registered X6.9. The source was Sunspot 1263 which is nearing the Western Limb. Because of its location, any large explosions may not be fully earth directed. When watching new video images from the STEREO website, it appears the CME is less intense than the one caused by the M9.3 flare from last week. A minor S1 Radiation Storm is in progress. One of the main attractions at the 2011 Paris Air Show was the Solar Impulse, a prototype aircraft powered exclusively by sunlight. It’s only a single seater and is regularly delayed by either too much wind or too little sun, but it is a remarkable aircraft, solar powered and able to fly during day or night. And luckily for onlookers, conditions at the Paris show on Sunday were perfect for the Solar Impulse’s first public demonstration flight. The aircraft flew for 20 minutes in front of large crowds at Bourget airport, where the world’s aviation industry is gathered for the biennial Paris Air Show. The Solar Impulse is powered by the sun through 10-thousand solar cells which cover its 63-metre (207-feet) wingspan and generate about 40 horsepower, about the same power a small scooter uses, according to the flight team. STRONG FLARE: AR11261 unleashed a brief but strong M9-class solar flare on July 30th at 0209 UT. Because of its brevity, the eruption probably did not hurl a substantial CME toward Earth, but this is not yet a firm conclusion Three big sunspot groups are rotating across the Earth-facing side of the sun. One of them, AR1261, is morphing into a circular ring. A Strong M1.4 Class solar flare from AR 11261 was recorded at 5:19 August 2nd, This active region was just past the earth facing position so there could be an associated coronal mass ejection headed earthbound. Associated with this blast was a Halo Coronal Mass Ejection which is earthbound or earth directed. Components of this Halo CME are expected to hit the Earth’s magnetic field sometime during August 5th. The magnetic field of AR 11263 harbors energy for powerful X-class solar flares.
